With the continued development of infrastructure, construction in geologically unfavorable areas is becoming increasingly common, which highlights the importance of risk assessment in tunnel design and construction. This study provides an overview of the main geological risk factors and their impacts, with particular emphasis on heterogeneous rock masses and tectonic processes and presents a Bayesian-based approach to risk management. The objective of geotechnical risk management is the systematic handling of uncertainties and the support of well-informed engineering decision-making. The proposed framework may serve as a practical guideline for the design and construction of future tunnelling projects.
