Once There Were Two Shipyards – Historical Lessons

Abstract

This article, drawing on the book Once There Were Two Shipyards, examines the cross-border history of the Komárom and Komárno shipyards and their role as sensitive indicators of twentieth-century Central European transformations. Situated on opposite banks of the Danube, the two factories functioned not only as industrial sites but also as social spaces where politics, economic systems, and everyday labour intersected. The study explores how major historical turning points shaped their trajectories, including the industrial legacy of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, the border changes following Trianon, the two world wars, the socialist planned economy, and the post-1989 market transition. The shipyards’ history serves as a case study of how local communities respond to geopolitical shifts while striving to preserve professional knowledge, identity, and economic relevance. The article highlights that the region’s industrial past stays an active legacy, offering valuable patterns for understanding economic adaptation, cross‑border cooperation, and collective identity.

A cikk a Volt egyszer két hajógyár című kötet alapján vizsgálja Komárom és Komárno hajógyárainak határokon átívelő történetét, amelyek a 20. századi közép-európai változások érzékeny indikátoraiként működtek. A Duna két partján fekvő üzemek nem csupán ipari létesítmények voltak, hanem olyan társadalmi terek, ahol a politika, a gazdasági rendszerek és a mindennapi munka világa közvetlenül találkozott. A tanulmány bemutatja, miként hatott a gyárak sorsára a Monarchia ipari öröksége, Trianon határváltozásai, a világháborúk, a szocialista tervgazdaság és a rendszerváltás utáni piaci átalakulás. A két hajógyár története esettanulmányként világít rá arra, hogyan reagál egy helyi közösség a geopolitikai kihívásokra, és milyen stratégiákkal őrzi meg szakmai tudását és identitását. A cikk arra is rámutat, hogy az ipari múlt továbbra is értelmezhető mintázatokat kínál a régió társadalmi és gazdasági folyamataihoz.
