A Salvaged Masterpiece: The Old Baroque Door of Sopron’s Eclectic City Hall

Abstract

The medieval town hall of Sopron was demolished in 1893 to be replaced by a monumental, Eclectic-style building designed by Möritz Hinträger. Only two fixtures were salvaged and integrated into the new town hall, including the Council Chamber's 1782 late-Baroque oak door, which now serves as the entrance to the archives. This artistic joinery is adorned with Zopf-style carvings and brass fittings by master locksmith Pál Payer. Documented by the research group of the University of Sopron, the door stands as an example of historical continuity and sustainability. Its physical survival proves that the values of the past can hold their ground in a modern environment while retaining their original function.
