Mild and cold winters in Transylvania in the 20th century

Abstract

Winter mean temperatures from 7 (1901-1960) and from 14 (1961-2000) weather stations in Transylvania, Romania were analyzed. Years with temperatures below the 10th percentile were considered cold winters, while years with temperatures above the 90th percentiles were regarded as mild years. Cold winters occured in 1909, 1929, 1932, 1942, 1954, 1963, 1964, 1969 and 1985. Mild winters were in 1902, 1910, 1951, 1977, 1988, 1994 and 1998. The meteorologial conditions of these winters are also reflected in the newspapers published in those years.
