Mathematician Jenő Soós (1937–2001) passed away twenty-five years ago

Abstract

Jenő Soós (Eugen Soós) was a professor in the Department of Theoretical Mechanics within the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Bucharest, as well as an esteemed researcher at the Institute of Mathematics of the Romanian Academy. Throughout his exceptional scientific and teaching career, he exerted a fundamental influence on the development of theoretical mechanics both in Romania and internationally. Jenő Soós's primary scientific merit lies in his ability to integrate the practical applications of mechanics into a higher-level, rigorous logical (axiomatic) and theoretical framework, purging the discipline of empirical or purely intuitive foundations. Because he lived in Bucharest, relatively isolated from Hungarian scientific circles, Hungarian history of mathematics has largely forgotten him. Until now, not even a photograph of him had survived. To remedy this, we are publishing this commemoration.

Soós Jenő (Eugen Soós) a Bukaresti Egyetem Matematika Karán az Elméleti Mechanika Tanszéken volt professzor, valamint a Román Akadémia Matematikai Intézetének elismert kutatója. Kivételes tudományos és oktatói pályafutása során alapvető hatást gyakorolt a romániai és a nemzetközi elméleti mechanika fejlődésére. Soós Jenő fő tudományos érdeme, hogy a mechanika gyakorlati alkalmazásait képes volt egy magasabb szintű, szigorú logikai (axiomatikus) és elméleti keretbe foglalni, megtisztítva a tudományágat az empirikus vagy pusztán szemléleti alapoktól. Mivel Bukarestben, a magyar tudományos élettől viszonylag elszigetelten élt, ezért a magyar matematikatörténet megfeledkezett róla. Eddig fénykép se volt róla. Ezt pótlandó közöljük ezt a megemlékezést.
