The ESA-HUNEDU Earth Observation (EO) curriculum development project aimed to create a modern and internationally competitive educational framework in the field of EO and geospatial sciences financed by European Space Agency. The development process started with an assessment of currently successful EO educational programs. In this context, the project coordinator conducted a series of in-depth interviews with key stakeholders. This process were followed by a Gap Analyses focusing on the competencies covered within the Hungarian higher education system. Then the development process was supported by two international “Train-the-Trainer” workshops that brought together leading experts from European and overseas research institutions. The workshops covered key topics including Google Earth Engine, Python-based EO processing, deep learning, time series analysis, the Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem, hyperspectral remote sensing, and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) applications. Based on these experiences, a three-semester curriculum was designed, covering the fundamentals of remote sensing, geographic information systems, geostatistics, cloud-based EO platforms, and advanced geospatial analytics. The program further introduces machine learning, deep learning, photogrammetry, hyperspectral data analysis, microwave remote sensing, and laser scanning technologies. Strong emphasis is placed on practical skills and real-world applications in agriculture, forestry, environmental monitoring, urban studies, hydrology, and climate adaptation. The resulting curriculum integrates current technological trends, industry-relevant competencies, and international best practices, providing a comprehensive educational framework for training future EO specialists and supporting the development of national research and innovation capacities in the rapidly evolving field of Earth Observation.
Kivonat
A fejlesztési folyamat a jelenleg sikeresen működő földmegfigyelési képzések felmérésével kezdődött. Ennek keretében a projekt koordinátora több mélyinterjút készített a szakterület meghatározó szereplőivel.
