Abstract

New occurrences of early Pannonian molluscs are reported from the central part of the Transylvanian Basin. The two sites are located north of Dâmbău and exposes the same argillaceous limestone layer. The recovered fossils are well preserved casts and most of them belong to the Lymnocardium undatum (Reuss), thus suggest an early Pannonian age (Congeria banatica biozone) to the studied assemblage. This high-abundance monospecific fauna was most probably deposited in a peculiar paleoenvironment controlled by the bloom of calcareous algae, i.e., the marine snow.
