Abstract

Entrained double oxide films, or bifilms, can seriously alter the structural integrity, the microstructure, and the mechanical properties of aluminum alloys. Bifilms, are known to be potential heterogeneous nucleation sites for (Al,Si)3Ti particles, and it is also known that TiB2 particles can adhere to oxide films. In this study, a new melt treatment technique is proposed, which based on the precipitation of (Al,Si)3Ti and the adherence of TiB2 particles. The relationship between double oxide films and titanium-containing intermetallic phases was examined by X-ray computed tomography (CT) of reduced pressure test (RPT) samples and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS).
