Abstract

The generally accepted biogenic origin of the hydrocarbons (HC) is a serious limit of further exploration and production possibilities. This concept is contradicted by the more recent replenishment (recharge) theory, and by the more controversial theory of abiogenic generation of HC. Critics of the abiogenic theory argue that the amount of HC that could be formed abiogenically is too small and not of commercial magnitude. However, the amount of HC that could be formed biogenically might be overestimated, since there is not enough source rock to form the HC reserves known biogenically.
