Abstract

The quality of the aluminum alloy ingots produced by different primary or secondary alloy suppliers can differ remarkably. In this way, the quality of the melt, and the castings made from it, is affected by the impurity content of the ingots used as charge material. In this work, an ingot quality assessment technique is presented, which is based on a modified reduced pressure test (RPT) pro

cedure. The presented method is a cost-effective solution, which can be readily used by foundries to monitor incoming ingot quality. The technique was tested on primary aluminum alloy ingots produced with different technologies.
