Abstract

Leó Szilárd was one of the most imaginative and versatile scientists of the twentieth century. He scientifically described to release of nuclear energy, the nuclear chain reaction; he recognized the potential of the extracted energy in the use of the atomic bomb and achieved all this in the shadow of Hitler’s threat. At the same time, he remained a staunch opponent of using an already finished nuclear bomb against innocent civilians and vehemently opposed the nuclear arms race becoming the guardian of peace during the very difficult Cold War years.

Szilárd Leó a XX. század egyik legfantáziadúsabb tudósa volt. Egy személyben feltalálta az atomenergia felszabadításának módját, a nukleáris láncreakciót, felismerte annak lehetőségét, hogy ily módon energia nyerhető, sőt atombomba is készíthető, és a hitleri fenyegetettség árnyékában elérte annak kifejlesztését. Ugyanakkor a már kész bomba ártatlan polgári lakosok elleni bevetésének, majd az egész nukleáris fegyverkezésnek legfőbb ellenzője, mondhatjuk, hogy a béke őre volt a
nagyon nehéz hidegháborús években.
