Abstract

We do not know exactly when spontaneous settlement development turned into conscious urban planning, in which engineers — in the modern sense of the word — began to play a decisive role, but it certainly happened several thousand years ago. In every culture, the engineer is a key figure in shaping and developing civilization. Where social demand ceased, nature reclaimed the area from the settlement — and in the best cases, monuments remained. However, many ancient technical structures are still in use today, and numerous ancient settlements have grown into metropolises with millions of inhabitants.

Nem ismerjük, hogy a spontán településfejlődésből mikor lett tudatos településtervezés, amiben már meghatározó szerepet játszott a mai fogalmaink szerinti mérnök, de biztosan több ezer évvel ezelőtt. Minden kultúrában a mérnök a civilizáció meghatározója, fejlesztője. Ahol megszűnt a társadalmi igény, a településtől a természet visszavette a területet, jó esetben megmaradtak belőlük műemlékek. De sok ókori technikai létesítmény ma is használatos és az ókori településekből sokmilliós metropoliszok lettek.
