Why Eiffel?

Abstract

Since the 60s of the 19th century, several excellent engineers studying in the best foreign technical institutes have worked in Hungary. However, their names were not well preserved in the public consciousness. Many times, instead of the well-known Hungarian creator, some buildings were named after well-known foreign stars who had nothing to do with the given facilities. Among such good-sounding names, Gustave Eiffel's is perhaps the most frequently used. The thesis tries to dispel misconceptions about each facility and names the actual designer. In doing so, we can get the feeling that Eiffel was a skilled construction contractor, not a designer of emblematic facilities, and he consciously behaved in such a way that his name would be associated with these facilities for posterity, to the detriment of his designer colleagues.

Kivonat

Magyarországon a XIX. század 60-as éveitől kezdve a legjobb külföldi műszaki felsőfokú intézetekben tanuló több kiváló mérnök alkotott. Neveiket a társadalmi köztudat mégis kevéssé őrizte meg. Sokszor az ismert magyar alkotója helyett egyes épületeket olyan ismert külföldi sztárokról neveztek el, akiknek semmi köze az adott létesítményekhez. Az ilyen jól csengő nevek közül talán a leggyakrabban felhasznált Gustave Eiffelé. A dolgozat az egyes létesítmények kapcsán igyekszik eloszlatni a tévhiteket, és megnevezi a tényleges tervezőt. Ennek során az az érzésünk támadhat (nem alaptalanul), hogy Eiffel egy ügyes építési vállalkozó volt, nem tervezője az emblematikus létesítményeknek, és tudatosan viselkedett úgy, hogy az ő nevét kapcsolja az utókor ezekhez a létesítményekhez, tervező kollégái kárára.
