Steel in acheological heritage protection: The Potaissa Castrum

Abstract

The current article presents the difficulties and the technical solutions implemented while designing the structure standing above the Thermae ruins (baths) of the Roman Potaissa fort of the 5th Macedonica legion, located in Turda, Romania. The structural design consists of a large structure, which covers and protects the ruins from degradation due to weathering effects and a hanging bridge system, which highlight the discovered archaeological material, allowing tourists to inspect the ruins up close, while also protecting the ruins from tourist who might damage them. The structure is 40.35 meter wide and 70.35 meter long. The bridge system has two longitudinal bridges and two transversal bridges, adding up to a total length of approximately 230 meters. The longitudinal hanging bridges are connected at one end to a platform, upon which a secondary structure is placed, intended for the protection and conservation of mobile cultural heritage. The paper summarizes the engineering challenges of the project team during the design process.

A cikk a romániai Tordán található V. Macedonica római légió (Torda akkori neve Potaissa) erődjének romjai fölött elhelyezkedő építmény tervezésénél felmerülő nehézségeket és műszaki megoldásokat mutatja be. A projekt célja egy acélszerkezet, amely lefedi és védi a romokat az időjárás viszontagságaitól, valamint biztosítani egy felfüggesztett járófelületet, amely lehetővé teszi a turisták számára, hogy közelről szemléljék meg a romokat és a felfedezett régészeti anyagokat. Az acélépítmény 40,35 méter széles és 70,35 méter hosszú. A felfüggesztett rendszer két hosszirányú és két keresztirányú járófelületet biztosít, amelyek teljes hossza körülbelül 230 méter. A felfüggesztett hosszanti gyaloghidak egyik vége emelvénybe torkollik, amelyen a mobil kulturális örökség védelmét és megőrzését szolgáló másodlagos építmény került elhelyezésre. A cikk részletezi azokat a mérnöki kihívásokat, amelyekkel a projektcsapat szembesült a tervezési folyamat során.
